Sacred Idleness

January 11th, 2006 by Laura Moncur in Motivation

Writing is far more sacred to me than idleness.I have a hard time with this quotation. Sacred Idleness sounds like a really nice thing to me. I fantasize about being able to just lie on a beach and relax. I even fantasize about being able to meditate in solemn sincerity. I just have a hard time being able to do any of those things. I just finding “doing nothing” uneasy.

It’s not like I haven’t tried. I’ve tried to lie on the beach, by the pool, or even in the backyard doing nothing. It always turns into a reading or writing project. I’ve tried to take meditation seriously. It has always turned into an efficient way to create a To-Do list. I just have never learned how to “just sits.”

Instead, I find relaxation in other ways. Crochet is really relaxing to me. Even though my fingers are quickly moving and I am creating an object that didn’t exist before, I find it incredibly relaxing. There is something about the repetitive movement of my fingers that eases my worries.

I also find writing relaxing. Writing is my full-time job, so it might seem like a dichotomy to find relaxation in my profession, but there it is. I’m incredibly lucky that way. When words are flowing out of my fingers, I feel more at ease than I have ever felt on a beach.

I also find reading relaxing. Finding a good book is difficult for me, but once I’ve found one, I will set all chores aside in order to enjoy my book. Losing myself in another world is the best way I know to rest. Plus, it’s rare when I read a book and I don’t find more quotations for the Motivational Quotes of the Day.

Most of the things I find relaxing could be considered work. Sacred Idleness sounds like a really good idea, but I’ve never gotten the hang of it. Maybe in my next life.

Edith Wharton’s Library

January 10th, 2006 by Laura Moncur in News

They are talking about a first edition of “Alice in Wonderland” but the real story is the author whose collection they are selling.

Edith Wharton was one of the shining stars of American Literature during a time when the United States was in turmoil over the first World War. Her accolades include the Pulitzer Prize and the Legion of Honor. She was a war reporter long before we realized that the media controlled the message.

Print the Chaff

January 9th, 2006 by Laura Moncur in Site News

Mike and I were at CES (the Consumer Electronics Show) last week. It was an interesting experience and I enjoyed looking at all the new things that will be available to the public soon. When deciding what to focus on, I felt a strange urge to write about EVERYTHING. It was completely impossible for me to do and the futility of it all made me feel a little bit like a failure.

I was going to write an entry on the concept of innovation, so I typed the word, “new” into the quotations search. Sometimes I believe divinity talks to us through the randomness of numbers. The preceeding quotation showed up as the second quote out of 460 because the word “newspaper” has the word “new” within it. It was the exact quote I needed to quit taking myself so seriously.

I wrote about the things that interested me the most. If that’s separating the wheat from the chaff and printing the chaff, so be it. I won’t be the first editor to do so.

You can see what did make the grade here:

Hope you enjoy the new gadgets that I found interesting enough to spend a week writing about. I sure did!

Margaret Cho’s Weblog

View DVD details at AmazonFor the last couple of years, I have been reading Margaret Cho’s weblog. I knew her as an actress in a horrible movie I had seen called, Sweethearts. Margaret played the smart-mouthed barrista at the coffee shop. It was a minor role that kept me from rewinding the video and returning it unwatched. I guess I should be angry at her for making the poorly written movie watchable enough to see it all the way through, but I’m not. I just wish she had more scenes.

Margaret Cho is an activist first and an actress second. She has a wide variety of standup comedy DVDs to see, but she rarely talks about them on her blog. She talks instead about her life, struggles with weight, and her fight for equality.

Here are some of my favorite quotes I’ve gathered from her writings over the years:
