Hidden in the equipment closet of the Birmingham News was a box of photos marked, “Keep. Do Not Sell.” They were photographs of the civil rights movement in Birmingham, Alabama during the 1950′s and 1960′s. The newspaper was unwilling to print the photos back then, but the full photo gallery has been printed now.
If it is true that what we cannot see does not exist, then Alabama would have been able to brush these incidents under the carpet and we would have never been able to conquer the blatant racism in our country. Racism still exists today and it must be fought wherever it is found, but it’s good to see how far we’ve come in the last fifty years.

New Orleans has put on a good show for Mardi Gras after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. Today is Fat Tuesday, the last day of Mardi Gras. Tomorrow is Lent and begins a season of conscious self-denial.
It seems that so many people celebrate Fat Tuesday without enjoying the season of Lent in its wake. If you have heard about all the festivities of Mardi Gras, but don’t know about Lent, visit this website to find out more:

On February 4th, Betty Friedan died. She was 85 years old and her contributions to the women’s movement were phenomenal. Can you imagine my surprise when I realized that the Quotations Page had NO quotations from her?!
She was the author of the book, The Feminine Mystique and her work helped millions of women stop living their lives through their husbands and children and start fulfilling their own dreams.
Over the past two weeks, I have been dilligently adding quotations from her and other pioneers of the women’s movement and you can enjoy them here:

Eight employees at the meat processing plant went in on a powerball lotto pool and won the huge $365,000,000 jackpot. That works out to about $22,500,000 apiece before taxes. Suddenly they are millionaires.
When asked if he still is going to work at the meat processing plant, Eric Zornes replied,
“I’ve been retired for about four days now.”
It makes me so happy to see them win this huge amount of money. I wonder how their lives will change because of it. Hopefully for the better.
