Quotation Details

Quotation #1486 from Laura Moncur's Motivational Quotations:

Music has charms to soothe the savage breast
To soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.
William Congreve, The Mourning Bride, Act 1 Scene 1
English dramatist (1670 - 1729)

Notes about this Quotation

  • The word "breast" is not an error but appears in the original play. One of the meanings of "breast" is "the front part of the trunk from the neck to the abdomen," and this meaning was far more common in Congreve's time than anything specific to the female anatomy.
