What do you think of the poetic writings of Jim Morrison? I feel Jim's been underrated and under-appreciated in the world of poetry because his on stage persona overshadowed the word-man he truly was.

If the work I viewed on your website were his full poems then I enjoyed them. Very short poems are my "thing". I have never heard of Jim Morrison before. Of course, I am no poet critic. I am no one special at all in the poetry community. I'm just a 15 year old kid who started writing in english class, room 316. But Mr. Morrison captured a little love in a few lines. And I liked reading more and more. Besides, no artist ever became famous until they died...right?

Jim Morrison is better known as being the lead singer of The Doors than for being a poet. Have you ever listened to them? Their debut self-titled record would be a great place to start. Anyway, he did want to be respected as a poet and not idolized because of his rock image. As could happen to any of us, fame took its toll on him and he died so very young. I'm sure he'd think it cool that a young person like yourself enjoyed his writing and is also getting into writing himself (or is it herself?).

Here are a few other short poems from his book called Wilderness: The Lost Writings of Jim Morrison (published posthumously) and are written just as they are in the book:

I've always appreciated Jim Morrison. I admit, he is a little unorthodox, but the poems he writes are highly underrated and misinterpreted. I love the serenity and equal mystery in his pieces... Just my two cents I have a lot of friends who listen to the Doors, but I've never been a huge fan of anything besides the lyrics.

The anniversary of Jim Morrison's death is July 3. I hope some of you will have an opportunity to reflect on Jim's work. His poetry is beautiful, albeit unsettling; nonetheless, it shows the word-man Jim was and how his words can effect one deeply. I know his poetry and his songs have had a profound effect on my life. You must allow yourself to get lost in the experience of reading (or listening, as in the case of "An American Prayer") to James Douglas Morrison.
