Apparently, Bertrand Russell once said: "Anything that can be put in a nutshell should remain there". However, I cannot find when he said this, or, to put it more precisely, in which work he wrote this.

Could anyone help me?

many thanks,
stefan

Are you referring to a book by Gregory David Roberts called "Shantaram" ?

I don't think you are going to find a Russell source for this. It's possible Mr. Roberts just made it up.

Hi,
although I never read the Shantaram, I believe that the quote is actually coming from that source. I came across it in a Dutch dissertation, which, by custom, has some quotes at the beginning. The author used Russell as a source, but I got suspicious when nothing linked the quote to him on the Internet.
Many thanks for your help.
Stefan

Well this is funny. In a document called Documenting Your Scholarly Sources they use this as an example:
Quote:
As Bertrand Russell said, “Ideas that can be put in a nutshell should stay there (Russell 1905:23).

apparently, at least according to a quick internet search, russell wrote "on denoting" in 1905, but in an internet version no nutshell is mentioned....
strange.
