I do not fully understand why some women allow or enter into such liaison, knowing the heartaches and the pains that come with it. To you, how worthy is this kind of relationship, if there's any?

Not having found a rich millionaire willing to give me diamonds, I can't answer from experience.

However, if the woman is truly "kept" ie a mistress fully provided for, in the past they have often fared better than a wife. They knew exactly what they were doing and some have used their position to social climb or to further their own interests and provide for the future. For example, I believe Coco Chanel started off this way.

Perhaps because it's secure.

Good point, even temporary and uncertain security would be better than poverty.
