Life moves on, whether we act as cowards or heroes. Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such.
~ Henry Miller
I believe in an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out.
~ Arthur Hays Sulzberger
If men could regard the events of their own lives with more open minds, they would frequently discover that they did not really desire the things they failed to obtain.
~ André Maurois

I agree but for many it's easier to live life oblivious and not question what we're told.
We all have our minds closed to some idea or another whether we know it or not. If you haven't heard of an idea how can you accept it?

Hello,
Open mindedness is a quality that few people possess, literature plays very important role in it , the more you read, the more experience you gain and more open minded you become, be it fiction work or non fiction, recently i finished Moose on the Table by Jim Clemmer it is based on management and leadership it is a very inspiring work.
Regards,
The first quote and last was heartful but the second was senseless because open minded is just a context or terminology used to describe the way in which one thinks. It is mental not physical...
Yeeess, but I don't think he meant it literally. Having an open mind is all well and good but at some point you have to draw a line and decide what's right and wrong, what you believe and what you don't.
I think what Arthur Hays Sulzberger means is that although it is a good thing to have an open mind, you cannot allow yourself to be convinced to support something on that basis alone. Some things are clearly wrong and allowing yourself to be convinced otherwise for fear of being called closed minded, could quite easily be described as being "so open that your brains fall out"
