Robin Williams quotes Thoreau's "I went to the woods" but the version quoted in the film and that which I founf on this website are different - I'm disappointed as I quite liked the cinematic version! Was Peter Weir simply using poetic licence and playing with the quote? Or does the film get it right, and the website get it wrong?

Hope someone can help.

Well done to those who came up with this site, by the way. It's brilliant.

Bartlett's has it as:

I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.~Thoreau, Walden, 2 Where I Lived and What I lived For.

From the movie:

[Quoting Henry David Thoreau]
Neil : I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life... to put to rout all that was not life; and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

I think Weir used poetic license. I don't think Thoreau would use the word "suck."

great quote, either way - the original speaks of the lessons to be learnt, the other of the pleasures to be had

together, a perfect lesson in good living, i feel

thanks for your post, phaedrus

actually, they are both right, in a way... take a look at this:

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion. For most men, it appears to me, are in a strange uncertainty about it, whether it is of the devil or of God, and have somewhat hastily concluded that it is the chief end of man here to "glorify God and enjoy him forever"..."

So, poetic licence then, but well-used.

Good night, J S

Hmm, guess I didn't check far enough except that some of the wording was changed for the film.
