This is a sonnet I wrote for English class about the book "Flags of Our Fathers."

“Flags of Our Fathers”

.. ..

So finally they were free

The heroes of the hour

If only they could see

Our logic and all devoured

.. ..

They were fortunate in their absence

This absence like a shade

For the families received silence

Silence that will never fade

.. ..

A symbol of all they were

Anchor, Globe, and Eagle

The past but a blur

The men rest as equal

.. ..

When you go home, tell them for us and say

For your tomorrow, we gave our today

.. ..

~Michael Rains
