I like Alan Bennett too, I watched The History Boys when it was released some while ago on the insistence of my girlfriend who has seen the original cast and others in theatre several times. I also remember liking Talking Heads which we started in part for GCSE.
My favourite playwrights though are Shakespeare, Ibsen and Chekov. I also very much enjoyed The Duchess of Malfi by Webster (a contemporary of Shakespeare) when I came to study it for A level.
My favourite author is still Ayn Rand.

Favorite French author: Victor Hugo
Favorite Russian: Chekhov or Turgenev
Favorite American: Edgar Allan Poe
Favorite English: J.R.R. Tolkien
However, since I am limited to the books I have read, this list is inevitably subject to change.

Paul S. Kemp writes some great fantasy, Robert B. Parker for a gritty mystery. For the classics, I guess Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.

Liz Carlyle and Jane Feather are my 2 favorites in the romance genre. Mz Carlyle's Never Deceive a Duke just made the NY Times Best Seller List this month. I'm an avid fan of hers and of Ms. Feather's...who also writes mysteries. Actually... I have so many favorites....cannot possibly list them all here. Some of them you all have already mentioned above.

My favorite book is by Robert Hugh Benson, called Initiation. It's a story of a man who found out the real meaning of suffering and the reason for it; it touched me deeply and changed my outlook on some things in life. I also love Charles Dickens' stories and those by Arthur Conan Doyle.

I would have to may favorite author right now is Brad Meltzer. His books are very compelling with fast moving plots, some days I say I will read for about 20 minutes and end up putting the book down 3 hours later. So far I've only read three of his books like The Book Of Fate, The Zero Game, and Dead Even. I highly recommend this author to everyone.

Douglas Adams. I was having a pretty rough time with Life, the Universe and Everything, and he made me laugh at it and call it fruity.

I prefer to speak of writings rather than writers, for obvious reasons, but here are some (no specific order): Jorge Luis Borges, Homer, Aldous Huxley, William Shakespeare, Umberto Eco, Tolkien, Alan Moore, and I'll agree with eric about Gaiman.
There are many authors I like because of one writing only, not included here.
