I might be able to help get you started, with confidence Phaedrus or thenostromo will move in for the kill. I'm pretty sure this expression or concept, if not the exact quotation, is from the New Testament of the Bible, and I think it's one of the four Gospels -- maybe Mark?

~Luke 4: 24 (Bible, KJV)

Luke Chapter 4: Verse 24: which says:
"I tell you the Truth, no prophet has honour in his hometown."
