"Smoking is a bad habit" then why do people still smoke?
Despite all the possible diseases like cancer and others as a result of smoking yet people are still smoking? Why do people insist on harming themselves and the others?

What makes it difficult for a smoker to quit? Thanks for some working places which are never permitting smokers to smoke during work and at that point people abide by rules.

"The best way to stop smoking is to carry wet matches."
--Anonymous

"I tried to stop smoking cigarettes by telling myself I just didn't want to smoke, but I didn't believe myself."
--Barbara Kelly

"To cease smoking is the easiest thing I ever did, I ought to know because I've done it a thousand times."
--Mark Twain

Your thoughts about that please?

Research now tells us wood smoke is apparently more harmful than tobacco smoke.

Why do people still smoke? because they are free to do so, just as others are free not to.

Do you smoke, Libra? If you do, you'll know the answer; if you don't, you'll never know.

I'd rather you'd never know...

mwal, I used to smoke but that was not for long and I completely quit smoking now. I just thought of what's the use and the cost of that upon my health and my dearest ones so I chose the best for all of us.

Let me put it this way:

If I hadn't been caught smoking whilst in highschool and severely punished, I'd never had touched those bloody sticks again. There's definitely something weird going on with my brain...

Anyway, good for you! : )

Maybe also the answer lies in why not? People have addicts because they may be addicted or simply enjoy a past-time. One may see why smoking is dangerous to health as well as seeing why it is not. Such as for relaxing.

I don't smoke, and don't approve of it, but I can see for some kids at school, it really calms their nerves... they just then are probably doing dope , crack and all the other drugs...

Eating candy and greasy food is a bad habit. Why do people do it?

People do all kinds of things which are bad habits.

I don't see smoking as a problem, unless I'm forced at gunpoint to smoke a cigarette. It's our life, it's our choice of lifestyle, I just wish I didn't have to cover public health costs in my taxes.

I think smokers cover public health expenses in their taxes as well. Don't know about your end but here 75% of the price of smokes is taxes. I object to the amount of resources used (wasted) on druggies myself.

I'm a bit of a commie socialist type myself and I don't mind my tax dollars be used to help my fellow man, whoever they may be. (Well, I should say former tax payer. I don't earn enough to pay taxes anymore and I'm basically living off of my savings. But I live in a house that is fully paid for (no mortgage) and I live with two other adults who pay the utilities, so my situation is a bit different now. However, I spent most of my life working long hours and earning a good living. I just never spent much money and was able to save most of what I earned. But all of those years of working my ass off as an office manager, plant manager and accountant, I never once complained about my tax dollars being used to help those who needed help.)

I don't mind helping those in need at all, unless the need is self created.

Then anyone who suffers health problems because of their over consumption of sugar should not be pitied then? Should they not be covered under universal health care?

Taboo factor- It's bad. The worst thing that is accessable to us as a society, yet still taboo due to it's previously mentioned health risks.

Risk factor- Makes you look like you don't care about your health, and don't care what other people think. This is an attitude strived for by many, ciggarettes are the easiest way to achieve this persona.

Side effects- Tabaco, like any other drug, has side effects that cause the user to feel a calming and pleasureable sensation. Over time, as with any other drug, the body builds a tolerance to the drug AND a dependence, at which point the user is now an addict.

Fitting in- People feel awkward when they are left out. When your 3 friends go out for a smoke, you feel the need to join them outside. When you get there you feel odd being the only one not sucking down cancer. Some break under this self inflicted pressure, others don't.

Peer Pressure- Some people feel awkward having a non- smoker around. They then try to pursuade that person to take up the habit to relieve the feeling.
