Hehe, well spotted Anajo. Yes, I'm afraid Proust is a bit of a bookshelf-filler, perhaps I'll attempt to read them all when I retire so I can get through them all.

I believe you definitely need to include these books:
- The catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger
- Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
- Life of Pi by Yann Paper Martel
- 1984 and Animal farm by George Orwell
- The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
- The world according to Garp by John Irving (actually every book of John Irving)
- The curious incident of the dog in the night-time and A spot of bother by Mark Haddon
and ofcourse books from Jules Verne and Alexander Dumas ( I'm am currently reading 'the three musketiers' )
ps perhaps also Momo from Michael Ende

^ ^ Just like I often do. Ok, to continue my train of thought: Life of Pi was okay except for the fact that we had to read it over the summer and do an assignment for my english teacher.

The quickest way to ruin a book is to read it in an English class.

My ultimate choice: Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. I'm just sorry I haven't read War and Peace. I'm finding it hard to locate a copy.

I have to agree with all suggestions concerning 'Hitchhikers Guide'... a must have (its a 4 part trilogy)
One book that Ill always own, no matter how many times I have to hunt it down to replace, is 'The Art of War'. Be careful with this one though. Direct chinese to english translations can get a bit muddled, so each publisher has a different version. And in the books defence, its not as sinister as you may think.

I picked up a book at borders like a month ago called THE NAME OF THE WIND (spelled in annoying caps) by Patrick Rothfuss, read a chapter, and forgot about it till last night. I recomend this book to everyone not put off by fantasy! I started reading it last night and I didn't stop till 2 AM. It's a great book, in a genre that is so often poorly exicuted but is (in my opinon) the best when exicuted properly.
