How about The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. I read it a few years ago, before I read many books, and remains to this day, my favorite. The Hobbit is a delightful adventure set in a beautiful world so elequently created by Tolkien's imagination. Like I said, I read it before I read many books, but when I started I couldn't stop. Always wondering what's gonna happen next. After that I discovered the joy of reading and since read countless more books, especially by J.R.R. Tolkien. Also, I figured since I loved literature so much now, why not create my own? So I was inspired to write. And that, mate, is a whole different story.

If you haven't read it before, pick it up. It will be worth every effort.

The Earthsea series is some of the best fantasy writing out there, IMO. Ursula K LeGuin is the author. If you happened to see the filmification on SciFi channel last year, it pretty thoroughly butchered the story.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention... My next set of favorites id the Lord of The Rings. Of course....

I would also recommend the Dark Tower series by Steven King, which is about a wizard who is trying to undo the bonds that hold the worlds together, and the 'gunslingers' who walk dwindling paths through increasingly distorted realities to try to stop this horrible fate. It's 7 books, and moves pretty slowly, but that can be a good thing. If you are a King fan, it's not as dark as much of his work, though it is reflective of all of his other work. King reportedly thinks it's his best stuff.

The Amber series by Roger Zelazny is pretty good, and also about walking paths between realities.

Speaking of walking paths between realities, I've also enjoyed the Gates series by CJ Cherryh

Personally, I've enjoyed the Wheel of Time series. Jordan portrays the picture he is painting marvellously, and though he does use adverbs too much, I definitely look forward to the next (and last one). I'll be reading it as soon as it's out!

I also recently read Abarat by Clive Barker, and I think it's the first in a series. I dunno, but it's an awesome start. That man's imagination knows no bounds!

And, of course, no fantasy collection is complete without ... dundundun! Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and other such texts. The man was simply brilliant (he most likely would be considered an actual genius) and I always enjoyed reading Quenya ...

I wouldn't consider any of the Harry Potter books fantasy; they seem to hold a different definition than that. But I 've read them all so far and they were good!

Jordan's wheel of time series is the most addicting series I've read. Warning: If you begin with book one (Eye of the World), you will be obsessed with reading. Chores will lie unfinished, relationships will be put on hold, and spouses will get angry. It will stay that way until you have read all 11 books. You won't mind one bit!

Brook's Shannara series was the first books that I read for "fun" when I was in my teens. I was hooked. I agree with some of the other posters that Raymond Feist and Robin Hobb are also very good reads. Dave Duncan's King's Blades are fun, but not deep.

Keep it real!

The Saga of Pliocene Exile by Julian May is a personal favorite. Epic scope spanning 4 main novels then branching off into another epic sci fi series.

It involves the discovery of a one way time tunnel to Pliocene Earth. Misfits in the future are sent back to the Pliocene Epoch only to discover that pre historic earth was invaded by aliens. The 4 novels are mainly fantasy as the aliens have advanced mind powers.

All the novels are page turners.

The Legend of Huma, by Richard Knaak. I read it several years ago,
and read it again earlier this year. I thought it was very well written,
but the ending was disappointing! No spoiler, here!

I've also ordered the graphic novel of The Hedge Knight. Having never
read George R.R. Martin, I thought I'd start with the comic book.

Who has read the Earth's Children Series? They are really good books written by Jean M. Auel. There are 5 books so far, more to come. The first book is called, Clan of the cave bear. Based in the last ancient ice age where there are two kinds of human beings, Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon. They are all a very good read!
