My personal favorite will always remain:
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
~by Robert C. O'Brien
Standing in the Light: The Captive Diary of Catharine Carey Logan
~by Dear America
Dreams in the Golden Country: The Diary of Zipporah Feldman, a Jewish Immigrant Girl
~by Dear America
Time Cat
~by LLoyd Alexander
Tuck Everlasting
~by Natalie Babbitt
A Wrinkle in Time
~by Madeleine L'Engle
More of a teenage book, but one of my favorites:
Green Rider
First Riders Call
~by Kristen Britain
I know there are more, but I can't think of them all right now.

I really didn't like Tuck Everlasting. I thought it was really boring.
But I really enjoyed reading the Madeleine L'Engle's series not just AWrinkle in Time but the rest of them as well.

I teach pre-school so I'll say my favorites are any children's books that get the children involved. Those with which they can sing along, repeat a rhyme or anything of that nature really draw kids into the joy of reading. Also I love to read them books that expose them to things like the environment, different cultures, etc. It's never too early open up dialogue and to get children to think outside their little world.
My personal favorites to read to them are:
The Gingerbread Man
Dr. Seuss' ABCs (or any Seuss books, really)
The Earth and I; Water; The Sun is My Favorite Star (all by Frank Asch)
Any classic fairy tales that they can re-enact with props and stuff
For those of you that may also teach or even just spend time with young children, don't be afraid to expose children to new words. All my three-year-olds know about the dedication page of a book, what personification means, and who Harpocrates is. He's the Greek god of silence depicted as a child quietly sitting with his finger to his lips. When the children become loud during storytime, I just say, "Harpocrates" and they know that's a signal to get quiet and listen.

saint exupery's little prince but i never think it is a book for children.
you have to think twice or more to give it as a gift to someone. you have to be sure that he/she 's merit that book.

I'll let you know when I read it, then you can give me an answer. I just wanted to know why it is so special. Why you have to think twice before giving it to someone.
