If you make a promise to yourself, how do you fight and overcome temptation to keep the promise?

I don't know how it works but as I find resisting temptation fairly easy I am not the best person to judge.

That is self-discipline. Good answer.

Not sure if self discipine is the right way to put it. It suggests I want to but can control myself not to do something where as I actually just don't want to.

No, that would be self restraint.

Phix you are suggestingit requires discipline to not do something you don't want to do. This, to me, seems illogical.

Self-discipline is control over the mind and body. This allows one to restructure his thoughts or beliefs with better information and improve his behavior, essentially overcoming temptation itself.
Self-restraint does not deal with belief and so the temptation remains. Through the power of his own will one fights to resist temptation by choosing not to give in to it. Without reconstruction of the mind he will eventually lose this battle and ultimately be overcome by his temptation.
Self restraint must lead to self-discipline in order for one to be successful.

You may be right. I'll get back to you when I find my dictionary.

Use the dictionary on line. It's faster that way.

in the first place i dont understand the logic of resisting temptation. why do u need to resist something u want to do...the best way to deal with somethin u want to do is to actually do it..by that way u make urself happy and ur mind also is free from the thought of restraining...

I choose to resist temptation as a way of finding out how strong my will is. Also if I often feel tempted to lash out at people when they annoy me. Resisting this temptation is the only honorable thing to do.

Nice answer.
kavitha, the way i see it is that just because its tempting to do something, doesnt mean your going to feel good about it. Like sigfried said, sometimes my friends make me want to rip there heads off (figurativly speaking, of course ), but if i sucumbbed to the temptation, it would be damaging to my relationship with them.

i dont see getting angry at others as a temptation at all...it is jus a reaction to what they do to us...the best way to get over anger at others is to do something u enjoy...what i meant was to do what we want to do in life...if u want to go somewhere, eat something oh...whatever it is its worth doing what u want to do...
