A continutation of mine and Phix discussion about celebrity. Reposted here where it is more relevant. Here are the key points so far
It is I think a sad culture we live in that celebrities are more well known than our politicians or scientists.
I definitely agree with that. But also look closer to see something else.
Politicians and scientist compel people to participate in reality.
Entertainers help people escape from it.
A celebrity is someone who is celebrated because of their achievements.
To celebrate the achievements of entertainers over those of the scientist and politicians indicate a deeper problem.
Society is more excited by what isn't real than what is.
As I said before the label of entertainer, or politician, or even scientist is just that, a label given by society. Thats fine so long as people remember that each of them is first and foremost a human being.
God has made us, but if we allow church and state to define who and what we are overall, we live in fantasy and not reality. All groups and roles we play keep us divided by hiding our basic nature which is our common bond.
Scientist solve universal mysteries. Politicians address human problems.
Entertainment keeps us oblivious to the both.
Do you know why?
