About a year ago, my nephew Zachary age 15, was with his friends in an open top jeep wrangler when around a corner, a 18 year old that was drunk and high on weed, swerved left of center and hit the jeep head on. All the boys except for my nephew was wearing his seatbelt. Zachary got thrown from the jeep and died instantly.
Now, his mother, Rene, my sister, was at home while, her husband a firefighter, was at work. The call for the accident went to his station. So, little did he know he was going to the accident that his only child and son was in. Mark, his father, came upon the scene and didn't know it was his son till they lifted the sheet.
Could you imagine having to go through that. Now, here is my question to all that read this. What do you say to a sister that you haven't talked to in years even though I should have callled when this happened but didn't. What do you say to a grieving sister that you love and haven't fallen out with, just haven't kept in contact.
I just don't know how to start by saying I am soo sorry this has happened to you . I have two kids and don't want to talk about them if it will hurt her. Please advice would be nice .

How about, 'Can I do anything to help'?
How about a simple 'Hello'?
Knocking on the door and allowing her to start the conversation?

If she's away in another city perhaps a very simple note to say how much you are thinking about her, ask if you could you talk on the phone or get together somehow and see what happens from there?

I agree with this. Not exactly the time for guilt. Just show that you're there and that you care - despite the lack of communication between you two.
