A good series of books to read that compliment the Ayn Rand books very well are the sci-fi books by Lois McMaster Bujold.
The planet Barraryar that she has created is very much what a Randian universe would be like.
Miles does his best to survive in a world where only the best are allowed to compete.
Start with The Warrior's Apprentice, even though it's book three in the series. You can go back and read about his parents and his conception later.
