I would choose Maedhros from Tolkien's Silmiarillion, because he lived just long enough to see the demise of all he ever loved including brothers, cousins, father, grandfather....the list goes on and on. While it would be painful, I would love to have seen that much 'history'.

Either that or Raistlin Majere from the Dragonlance series--talk about a history-maker. And it would be fun to be the greatest mage to ever walk the earth...

I must say a contributing factor to my choices ist my love of medieval weapons, warfare, times, and all else.

Edna Pontiller from Kate Chopin's The awakening, not so because I like her character but because I would want to stop her from going for that swim at the end of the novel

I think I would have to say Thomas Covenant from Stephen Donaldson's books. I love the way that Donaldson sets up his characters. There is so much strife that is introduced because he gives them a basic fear (In Covenant's case, his fear is losing what little sense of reality and life is left to him) and then he puts them into a situation in which the only way they can overcome is by overcoming that basic fear. For the same reason I also love Donaldson's Lady Terisa of Morgan.
