I've recently seen some Ib Orals "helps" on the website so I decided to give it a try. If you dont know what Ib Orals are, they're 10-15 min. oral presentations on a key passage. You can go in two direction with the passage-an analysis or commentary. Im doing an analysis for the sake of an analysis. It is much easier to expand from a specific detail into larger liteary elements like the book's theme or characterization.

My analysis is on a passage from Beowulf:

So times were pleasant for the people there
Until finally one, a fiend out of hell,
Began to work his evil in the world.
Grendel was the name of this grim demon
Haunting the marches, marauding round the heath
And the desolate fens; he had dwelt for a time
In misery among the banished monsters,
Cain’s clan, whom the Creator had outlawed
And condemned as outcasts. For the killing of Abel
The Eternal Lord had exacted a price:
Cain got no good from committing that murder
Because the Almighty made him anathema
And out of the curse of his exile there sprang
Ogres and elves and evil phantoms
And the giants too who strove with God
Time and again until He gave them their reward (99-114).

I have a general outline already planned but not the speech itself.
Im going to first talk about the physical aspects of the passage-Alliteration and Imagery. This all contributes to the general characterization of Grendel. It shows his evil, which is characterized by demonic roots-Cain. This constrasts with Beowulf's "HolyFather/God-given power" character plays along with the theme "good always conquers evil."-My Thesis After discussing Grendel's evil nature, I will move into Beowulf and his "Good characterization". He boasts(Not to be confused with the modern connotation. It is a moral pledge to outline what you will do). He also practices Wirgield or family/kin honor.

These are my main ideas I will talk about. Any more motifs, characterization, etc I can use? And maybe some help expanding these ideas?
