ever read the maltese falcon? that's a good one. it's probably my favorite mystery novel of all time.

Sad to say, but I've only seen the movie. Bogart rocks.

A few months ago I found a "new" mystery writer: Lindsey Davis The man character is Marcus Didius Falco. I really enjoyed the historical characters and events.

I very occasionally read Michael Connelly's novels as a light-read (you might have heard of Blood Work which was made into a film with Clin Eastwood, I believe), but they are far superior to the one-dimensional Cornwall novels...

Agatha Christie is a GOD rather than a QUEEN. She's superb.

I agree - simplicity of style and a great mystery. Just like a god.

Currently reading Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly. He's a demi-god.

I haven't read Agatha Christie. Sorry, but I'm sensing she's good. Any suggestions for a first time reader? I'm pathetically addicted to true crime novels. It's sad and creepy really. I love looking at the photos and listening to the gruesomely awesome details. Sickening, but addicting. I just finished Helter Skelter. It was fantastic. But suggest me a good first time Christie novel, please.

if you like christie try georgette heyer's murder mysteries. she is fabulous. her characters come to life right in front of you. she's wonderful.

another author i love is mary roberts rinehart. the spiral staircase, the case of the wandering knife, the yellow room, they're all great. do not bother with 'the bat', though, i think someone was joking when they published it under her name.

barbara michaels is good, too, and there are ghostly spirits in some of them.

most of the authors mentioned are good, patterson is great.

anne perry creeps me out. she actually helped murder her friend's mother when she was young. htg.
