What are you talking about? Isn't it proven we're being dumbed down? I mean, on the surface, with the advancement of technology, it would seem that we're getting smarter. But the fact that we live in such a consumerism society which shows that our values have definitely been dumbed down. But as far as intellegence goes with the average person, all the crap we consume has to be effecting our minds and bodies. Plus, I think television and other media are definitely devolving human beings. This would lead me to believe that the point of living would be to take care of yourself, but that could have so many different interpretations.

what i mean by it not working is not that we haven't aquired knowlage, but rather that we as a human race seem to be becoming more prejudiced against each other because of silly, petty reasons like race, religion or sex. i know that we KNOW more but are we using this to improve the lives of people who are dying of hunger and thirst AND LACK of KNOWLAGE!?!? sure the whole race issue is becoming less prevalent but what about hating someone just because he/ she loves someone of the same sex or is really involved in his/her church / temple / mosque.
i think we need to stop looking for our own advancement or betterment and start taking care of other people!

i think that some of the beauty of starting to look after others is that already there is someone doing the same thing and you are the object of their attention. i think that the more you give to others, the more you free yourself up to be loved and be taken care of by others - because you aren't so preoccupied by yourself and your own problems.[/quote]

Rana-- i really think that maybe you don't have enough faith in people, sure there are some right barstards out there but it has been my experiance that most people really become quite nice when their needs are met and their hearts are taken care of with respect and honesty. i'm not saying go out and save the world but start with a nice word to your grouchy neighbour and a smile and a sincere thank you to the person who packs your groceries

the sad thing is that this is a reality that we face. i'm unhappy to hear that you have been hurt in such a grand scale that you don't want to believe that people can be nice or gentle.
i really really hope that you get to know some people who will help you restore your faith in mankind.

Life is about Feeling. Everythings that's alive feels. Whatever we feel, God feels. So basically, we are just a bunch of antennas taking in sensories and recording them into the universal conciousness. Ya Dig?

Leo Tolstoy tried to answer this thread's question in his novel Anna Karenina. Anna is Tolstoy's version of Everyman.
For comments about this book see the thread, "What books do I have to read?"

There is no 'point' to life, just enjoy it.

The Final End of every worldly thing's existence is identical to the First Cause.
Lesser things yield to greater things, ending in man who transcends this world.

The purpose of life for me is to learn to be happy and to become more like God but then again, I'm a very religious person hince my outlook on life.
