I recomend A Peoples History of the United States of America by Howard Zinn. It tells the history of America from the view of the people who didnt truly benefit from America such as the Native mericans and slaves.

John Adams
Andersonville -- This is a historical fiction novel by MacKinlay Kantor.
The Lives of the Caesars by Suetonius
Triangle: The Fire That Changed America by David Von Drehle
The Tale of Genji is also historical fiction, as is The Samurai's Tale, but they're both pretty good accounts of Japanese history in varying subjects.

I'm not in the least bit a history buff, and I haven't read more than 7 or 8 history based books, so I'm not really in the position to recommend a book. However, I can definitely tell you a book not to read--April Morning by Howard Fast. I was thoroughly bored from beginning to end--minus a page or two.

I love history and have found myself drawn to ALTERNATE history books, such as Blood and Iron, The Center Cannot Hold, The Victorious Opposition. The series also goes on to WWII, but also before the books named has ones about WWI. (They are by Harry Turtledove)

I read a book by the name of Plot Against America by Phillop Roth. It actaully is not historically accurate (even though it tells you how far it is historically accurate in the back). It is more like what would have happened if Charles Lindbergh, an anti-sematic, world famous pilot, became president during WWII. It is definitly a WHAT IF book but raises a lot of eye brows and makes you wonder. I again would like to emphasize that it is historically accurate up to a certain degree.
