My question is similar to writerstrix "Why?" post, but at a different level and from a different perspective:

I'm an elementary school teacher blessed with the assignment of teaching literature for 45 minutes 5 days a week.... What children's books (grades 1, 2 and 3) do you think all American children should be familiar with?

PS: I've also enjoyed following the "Favorite Children's Poems" discussion!
