I am starting the new year reading The Story of an African Farm by Olive Schreiner...published in 1883....this is the first of my continuing reading of 'classic novels' I have never read before for 2010....I found a 1971 Penguin Modern Classic edition....

This is great story telling....

Freedom by Jonathan Franzen is about a dysfunctional family....my family was highly dysfunctional...much worse that the characters Franzen presents...they aren't too bad...well some of them...my mother and father had few redeeming features...indifference to their children was the main one ...we were fed...housed...not short of a dollar...but no love !!!
Freedom reminds me of Jennifer Haigh's The Condition....also about a dysfunctional family...Haigh's family arrive at the end of her good story almost intact...good on them...
Would it so easy in real life !!!!

I am struggling with Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson and finding it hard to keep track of the story. Would appreciate other opinions on this book.
