Quotations and Literature Forum

I am going to be writing an essay on the role of food within literature, with a focus upon the way in which food is used to represent sexuality and serves as a symbol for physical desire. Something along the lines of Christina Rossetti's the Goblin Market. And Eve eating of the forbidden fruit in Milton's Paradise Lost.

I would be interesting in any suggestions of any works you may know of that might use food as a metaphor of lust, or as a way to convey sexuality. I am open to anything, novels, poems, short stories, perhaps even plays or works of mythologies.

But I would prefer classical works over contemporary.

The Reeve's Tale in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales - a Miller cheats with corn and underweight loaves and gets cheated on by his wife and daughter

Chocolat by Joanne Harris - definitely explores the sensual effects of chocolate, is a very good story and I highly recommend the film of the same name.

There's a very lightweight but fun recent novel called The Food of Love by Anthony Capella where both feature prominently and are intertwined.

Perhaps check out Decameron and the original Arabian Nights , I think there's the classic lost ring found in the cooked fish story in the last, but I can't remember actual food stories, you may be lucky

Also Paris and the Golden Apple springs to mind.
