We often tend to see things as we want to percieive them rather than how they appear in actuality.
As a land agent, I can tell you with authority that people who own property have a tendency to think that their property is worth more than the market value. People who write poetry tend to think that the poems they write will have mass appeal. We as parents tend to think that our children are better than the neighbor's children.
