Thomas Szasz made a similar comment:-
"The stupid neither forgive nor forget; the naive forgive and forget; the wise forgive, but do not forget."

It's hard to move on from people doing stupid things.

Let us consider the turmoil that Ghandi faced during his life. And let us also take into consideration the strength that it takes to forgive a person or system that disregards the rights others. To forgive one that has wronged you requires an inner strength which necessitates you to abandon the concept of vengeance. Human beings frequently suffer from the "eye for an eye" syndrome, and this frequently leads to long term conflict and violence. The act of forgiveness does not mean that we agree with the wrong; it means that we do not allow the wrong done to us to define us. Throughout history mankind has committed various atrocities. Those which bear the unfortunate burden of persecution can overcome the system which commits those acts by forgiving and continuing to strive for fair and equitable treatment.
““Lack of forgiveness causes almost all of our self-sabotaging behavior.”
- Mark Victor Hansen

For me this quote implies that true forgiveness requires really stepping into the other person's shoes in order to understand their motivations. After you have really sympathized with the causes behind the act, you are able to feel differently toward the person in a way that enables you to move on without a desire to retaliate. All of this require strength of character.
