Does anyone know the quote 'football is the art of the masses'. Need it for an essay I'm doing. Need the exact wording and the author. Please help me!!

I took a look around and saw advertising, cinema, popular culture, photography, country and Western music, and even opera and Shakespeare, being called the "art of the masses," but not football.

Football - soccer - has been described as working class ballet. This phrase is attributed to the television character Alf Garnett, who became Archie Bunker in the American adaptation. However, I suspect that the phrase is much older than that.
