I am trying to get the EXACT quote form J.M. Barrie about God's gift of memory. I have read different versions on several sites and none of them are what my mother told me many, many years ago. Her version was this: "God gave his children memory, that in life's garden there might be June roses in December." Since my mother was such a poetry fan and told me this back in the 1960s I feel she knew the right version. IT has always been my favorite. I would like to find a book that has the correct quote. Seems to me all the rest of them just blindly followed another person's version without question. Does anyone know where or how to find the original quote? Thank you for your time.

Roses in December
God gave His children memory
That in life's garden there might be
June roses in December.
But sin the Father's goodness scorns,
And weaves of them a crown of thorns,
That wounds when they remember.
Sharp, stabbing points of vain regret
Around my soul forever set,
Turn June into December.
Ah, Christ, who wore my crown of thorns,
Have mercy on the heart that moourns,
Forgive when I remember.
~Rev. Geoffrey Anketall Studdert-Kennedy (1883—1929)
English Anglican priest and poet. Roses in December
Barrie is not the author of the poem but was quoting Studdert-Kennedy's lines in a speech.

Oh my! Thank you so much. I do not recall ever having read the entire poem before. I would bet my mother read it to me however. It is beautiful. You've made my day . . .
Thank you also for the explanation about the true author. It appears everyone (else) including me has always believed the author to be Barrie.
May I ask where you found this?
Recently I had a lifelong friend of mine refinish a very old small table for me. She painted these words along the four sides - it is one of my favorite things. I think of my mother (bless her soul) every time I read it.

I found Barrie's speech on a website with the quote, but further checking revealed an author who used the quote in a book and deeply researched the quote. She claims it was Kennedy's and misattributed to Barrie. From there I searched and found the whole poem.

Well - again, thank you or doing the research. I tried yesterday to find it on-line in one of Kennedy's publshed works and could not. Sufficient to have the entire poem though.
Thanks again.

This is one of my favorite from J.M. Barrie: “Stars are beautiful, but they may not take an active part in anything, they must just look on for ever. It is a punishment put on them for something they did so long ago that no star now knows what it was. So the older ones have become glassy-eyed and seldom speak (winking is the star language), but the little ones still wonder.” _____________________________ Rose Gold Diamond Rings
