Can someone help me? I really don't understand this quote.
It's by Fran Lebowitz, the quote is "Life is something that happens when you can't get to sleep"

I'm going to take an abstract try at it, but I think it's pretty much saying sleep and life are different from each other. When we're awake, we experience life; we live it. When we're asleep, we are merely waiting to wake back up to continue our journey in life.

Yes I agree; I believe it also makes reference to the fact that some of the most meaningful experiences in life come when we do not expect them or when we are not in control. So often we try to manage and control our lives, our personalities, our relationships in order to achieve our goals.
The metaphor would be getting up in the morning with The Plan To Make It Happen but achieving, contributing nothing; and then having the most genuinely meaningful idea or interaction erupt when we're lying in bed that night annoyed because we can't get our brain to shut down on command.
That's my take on it.
