What is the meaning of the following quote by Tom Stoppard:
"We cross our bridges when we come to them, and burn them behind us with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke and a presumption that once our eyes watered"

"We cross our bridges when we come to them..."
We took each trial for each trial. Meaning they didn't get ahead of themselves, or didn't worry about the unnecessary.
"...and burn them behind us with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke and a presumption that once our eyes watered"
After they handled their trial, their problem, their anxiety, or their decision, they forget it, burn it and destroy it.
Not only has it burnt, but the smell of the smoke is no longer their. It is just a memory.
Not only has it burnt, but they can only assume their eyes watered because of the smoke. They are not even sure their eyes did water.
It is stressing their moving on, or getting over something.
Everyone says to 'cross that bridge when it gets to you,' or don't worry about things you can't yet handle.
"They" took each bridge as it came, and moved on, forgot the problems as they went.
At least that is my interpretation...

as life goes on, the now becomes the past. and as we try to move forward and leave it all behind, all we remember is the thought that we suffered.

"all we remember is the thought that we suffered"
Excellent!
Quote: The pain that you create now is always some form of non-acceptance, some form of unconscious resistance to what is. On the level of thought, the resistance is some form of judgment. On the emotional level, it is some form of negativity. The intensity of the pain depends on the degree of resistance to the present moment, and this in turn depends on how strongly you are identified with your mind. ~ Eckhart Tolle http://www.quoteland.com/topic.asp?CATEGORY_ID=294http://www.quoteland.com/topic.asp?CATEGORY_ID=292
I had a friend that used to say:
"...I got tired of waking up to the smell of burning bridges."

Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for help with this quote.
Many quotations are like poetry...no "right" or "wrong" answer. These were all most interesting and I appreciate "y'all" for taking time to write.
Best regards,
