I would truly appreciate it if someone could inform me of who said- "As to hanging, it is no great hardship. For were it not for that, every cowardly fellow would turn pirate and so unfit the sea, that men of courage must starve."

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

Susie

I'm seeing lots of references to Mary Read:

This one from 1724 seems authoritative:
http://www.arthur-ransome.org/ar/literary/pyrates.htm
Quote:
She answer'd, that as to hanging, she thought it no great Hardship, for, were it not for that, every cowardly Fellow would turn Pyrate, and so infest the Seas, that Men of Courage must starve:—That if it was put to the Choice of the Pyrates, they would not have the Punishment less than Death, the Fear of which kept some dastardly Rogues honest;
