I see, said the blind man as he spit through the knothole in his wooden leg (H. 45).
[...]And finally, our Wellerism probably shows contamination with another and quite unrelated Wellerism, "'Aha,' she cried and waved her wooden leg."
A more detailed analysis of these modern versions is unnecessary. They imply the existence of a flourishing oral tradition.
