Found it attributed to Dr. Ralph Nichols, a pioneer in listening research and instruction. this brings up an interesting point. We teach our kids the three R's and how to think, but we don't teach them how to listen effectively.

There are four basic categories of listeners attributed to personality.

#1) Content Listeners (Jack Friday, "Just the facts Mam!")
#2)Time/Action Listeners (time conscious not relationship conscious)
#3)People Oriented Listeners (people oriented and not task oriented)
#4) Entertainment Listeners (Creative--song and dance people)

My dominant charcteristic tends to be an entertainment listener.
