Dance like no one is watching
Love like you'll never be hurt
Sing like no one is listening
Live like it's heaven on earth

William Pugh

(I may be wrong about the last name, but think the quote is correct)

William Purkey

I contacted Mr. William Purkey asking him (here is the beginning of my message to him):
"Are you the author of a quote that goes something like:
"Dance like no one is watching,
Work like you don't need the money..."
and this is his reply:
Dear John,
Thanks for your note regarding the quote. It is
obvious that the theme has worked its way through many minds.
I certainly want to give credit to those who have tinkered with this beautiful concept.
My version follows. I am sure that most of the words are mine.
"You've gotta' dance like there's nobody watching,
Love like you'll never be hurt.
Sing like there's nobody listening,
And live like it's heaven on earth."
(And speak from the heart to be heard.)

Hope this helps.
Best wishes,
William W. Purkey

Come From the Heart
Written by Susanna Clark and Richard Leigh
Performed by Kathy Mattea on "Willow in the Wind"
When I was a young girl, my daddy told me
A lesson he learned; it was a long time ago:
If you want to have someone to hold onto
You're gonna have to learn to let go.
You got to sing like you don't need the money;
Love, like you'll never get hurt;
You got to dance like nobody's watchin'.
It's gotta come from the heart , If you want it to work.
Now here is the one thing I keep forgettin':
When everything is falling apart
In life, as in love, you know I need to remember
There's such a thing as trying too hard.
You got to sing like you don't need the money;
Love, like you'll never get hurt;
You got to dance, dance, dance like nobody's watchin'.
It's gotta come from the heart, If you want it to work.
You got to sing sometimes like you don't need the money,
Love sometimes like you'll never get hurt,
You got to dance, dance, dance like nobody's watchin'.
It's gotta come from the heart if you want it to work.

Other attributions you will find on the internet:

Work like you don't need the money.
Dance like no one is watching.
And love like you've never been hurt.
~Mark Twain
"Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, live like there is no tomorrow, dance like no one is watching."
~Bono (U2)
You've got to live like there's no tomorrow, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like no one is watching.
~Chinese proverb
Love like you have never been hurt; work like you don't need the money; and dance like no one is watching.
~Grace Nation

This quote has been attributed to William Purkey, but there are several versions with several attributions.
I am as close as I can be to being convinced that this expression was around before "Come From the Heart"
I received this email message about the three line version from another discussion forum participant:
THANK YOU for your input re my search for the author of this quote. Several times I've been informed of the Clark/Leigh lyrics performed by K. Mathea, BUT I refused to believe that was the origination. My Dad who died in 1985 often used the quote as his attempt to inspire me as a young adult, and it just did not seem possible that Kathy Mathea could possibly be old enough to have influenced the miles of "work....love....dance" of my shoes!
Though this is anecdotal, this supports what a relative of mine has told me. Just thought I'd share.
Not as fresh as its predecessor, this LP included three more number one hits ("Come From The Heart," "Burnin' Old Memories" and "She Came From Fort Worth") and led to being crowned CMA/Female Vocalist Of The Year in 1989.

Anyone who would have tuned in a country station anytime in the late '80s or early '90s?even by accident?would have heard one of Kathy Mattea's many hits. Songs like "Come From The Heart,". . .
http://www.countrycool.com/news/05_00/01feat.html

"Guy Clark did not write this song and he'll tell you in concert that he is mighty jealous of those who did. It was written by his wife Susannah Clark and a friend named Richard Leigh. Guy claims they spent all of about 20 minutes on the sucker. (Roger in Baltimore, www.mudcat.org, 4 Jun)"

Work Like You Don't Need The Money
Copyright 1999 Lisa Rogers

Work like you don't need the money
Love like you've never been hurt
Dance like there's nobody watching
And laugh like your mama said,
"You'll get no spinach
if you don't finish all your dessert."
Hold your ground. take up space
Life's too short for such a long face.
The bottom line of a lofty goal
Is you gotta lose yourself
if you wanna save your soul
Work like you don't need the money
Love like you've never been hurt
Dance like there's nobody watching
Live like the zen buddist
who's now a nudist
cause the dry cleaners lost his last shirt.
Eat your veggies
like your life was at steak
Give with all your heart
so somebody else can take.
Three times a week move 'til you break a sweat
Take good care this time around
in case this life is all we get
Work like you don't need the money
Love like you've never been hurt before
Sing like there's nobody listening
Sleep like the guy who keeps his whole family up at night
but he never hears himself snore.
