1) Has anyone ever heard of an ancient story where a poet, bard or perhaps a historian comes to a village, and laments that there is no piazza (plaza) to rest at...perhaps, Homer, Socrates or Plutarch?... 2) I am looking for a Greek saying or proverb, that goes something like, 'To see what is in front of you is wisdom'?

Could it be Melville?

Wisdom begins with wonder. -attributed to Socrates

Kindness is more important than wisdom, and the recognition of this is the beginning of wisdom. - Theodore Isaac Rubin

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom"~Bible (KJV) Proverbs 9: 10)

"Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom."
~ Bertrand Russell

"To see what is in front of you is wisdom" sounds more like Zen than Greece to me. It reminds me of "to drink when thirsty, eat when hungry," and other Zen maxims in praise of simplicity and directness.
