"Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that."
~Bill Shankley, (1914-81) in 'The Sunday Times', 4 oct. 1981

"Football? It's the beautiful game."
~Pele

"Oh, he's football crazy,he's football mad,
And the football it has robbed him of the
wee bit of sense that he had,
And it would take a dozen skivvies, his
clothes to wash and scrub,
Since our Jock became a member of that
terrible football club."
~ Jimmie McGregor, 'Football Crazy' (1960)

"If you're in the penalty area and don't know what to do with the ball, put it in the net and we'll discuss the options later."
~Bob Paisley

If it were not for football, I would not be playing football today.

Lance Goodbody, tight end, San Francisco State. Next year he hopes to be a wide receiver.

Why do American footballers dress up like motorcyclists?
Because they hit like trucks.

I went to college on a football scholarship because, like the NAACP says, the mind...is a terrible thing.

The name of the comedian who did the football skit escapes me, but it was hilarious. Maybe you had to be there...

The first one sounds like Garrett Morris on SNL, but I know who you're talking about -- he used to be one of my favorite comedians, but I can't recall his name, either. Whatever happened to him? He was the funniest guy! That football routine had the Harvard character and the one who'd been hit in the head a lot -- I loved it. He also did that farmer trying to shoot the taunting bird til he catches it. It will drive me crazy all night til I come up with that guy's name.

Bob Nelson! He did Epy Eperson and all that. The bit you quote is: Bruce Koscioski, San Fransisco University, Tight end, but next year I hope to be a wide receiver.

The request that started this thread had nothing to do with American football. Soccer is called "football."
The quotes I provided were about "football" = soccer.

True, but I don't know any interesting quotes about soccer.

Geez, I sound like a party pooper. Sorry about that. Didn't mean to rain on anybody's parade.

Yes We Can
I love the game of soccer.
I see with beauty and clarity the way to success.
I am free from all discord and ready to play in harmony with my teammates.
I surrender all fear, all doubt - I let go of all uncertainty.
I am ready claim what is mine.
I bring all my mental and physical power on the field with me.
I show what is in my heart through my performance.
I move with enthusiasm and purpose.
I will keep my head up and act like a champion.
I am ready to be the best.
I am thinking positively, with no worry or stress.
I concentrate on putting forth all my effort to accomplish my objectives.
I believe in this team's spirit, determination and power to play a great game.
I have faith this team can reach its goals.
~Mark Morin

Soccer Player Prayer
Lord you made my neck a swivel
Help me not to ball watch
But rather scan the field
With the wisdom to anticipate
When my teammates need support
Running quickly to my mate
For many are needed for possession
But also let me see
The path of the through ball
To devastate our opponents
Please give me the strength
To make my share of runs
Showing for the ball handler
For quick distribution
Give me the sense
To play safe near our goal
But also give me the courage
To take on the foe's defenders
Let me peek at their goalie
Before I shoot
First touch if I can
But if I ever needed help lord
Its with low hard shots
To the far post
Should we lose the ball
Let me nimbly regain it
But if not tackling an opponent
To markup quickly
And if I'm outnumbered
Please give me patience
Not to sell my body
But delay for my teammates
Who I trust to aid me
As I have faith in you lord
But above all
Help us to get through this game
With fun and without injury
Respecting the ref
So we can play these guys
One more time
~Dan Rohdebush - 10/28/95

The Soccer Player's Prayer
Dear Lord, give me
strength of heart, mind,
and body to do my very
best for you, my team, and
myself. Fill me with
courage to keep my faith
and witness strong and to
honor you among my
teammates.
Amen

tn, you're never a party pooper, and you never rain on the parade; we love you. Think -- what would this forum be without you? I can't imagine it, and I'm glad I don't have to.

I'm taking those 11 ways to have an enthusiastic team to work tomorrow (can't hurt).

This isn't soccer, but it fits with this thread: my swim coach in college used to tell us "Losing hurts worse than practice."
