"Don't judge a book by its cover" has roots going way back (this information is all from a fellow moderator from another quotations website; I had nothing to do with digging any of this up)

Probably the earliest recording of the saying, "Don't judge by appearences" was in 35 BC by Horace in Satires, bk 1:
Ingenium ingens inculto latet hoc sub corpore
(A mighty genius lies hidden under this rough exterior).
Or, as another Latin proverb says,
"Vilis saepe cadus nobile nectar habet"
(a common jar often holds noble nectar).

Judge not according to appearence~New Testament, John 7:24.

This proverb first appeared in the U.S. in 1929:
American Speech: You can't judge a book by its binding.

It also appeared in Edwin Rolfe's The Glass Room:
You can never tell a book by its cover.

Too late I loved you,
O Beauty so ancient yet ever new!
Too late I loved you!
And, behold, you were within me,
and I out of myself,
and there I searched for you.
~St Augustine

"People are like stained glass windows; they sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light within."
~Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

The kind of beauty I want most is the hard-to-get kind that comes from within -- strength, courage, dignity.
~Ruby Dee

We have within ourselves
Enough to fill the present day with joy,
And overspread the future years with hope.
~William Wordsworth

Max Reid : My teacher tells me beauty is on the inside.
Fletcher : That's just something ugly people say.
~the movie "Liar, Liar" - 1997

There's beauty in the silver singing river
There's beauty in the sunrise in the sky
But none of these and nothing else can match the beauty
That I remember in my true love's eyes
- - - Bob Dylan "Tomorrow is a Long Time"
