Does a well known poem, to wit, “The Red Head”, a Grantland Rice composition about the famous football player Red Grange contain a literary reference which eludes me? If so what is the source which the reader should remember?

Two Ghosts that drift and glide,
And which of them to tackle
Each rival must decide;
They shift with spectral swiftness
Across the swarded range,
And one of them’s a shadow,
And one of them is Grange.

Few men may seize a phantom
Who drifts above the chart,
But even spectral phantoms
Must have at least a start;
Men reach to find both missing,
But this is not so strange
When one of them’s a shadow,
And one of them is Grange.

The Galloping Ghost is the subject of at least one other well known poem by Grantland Rice. The reference that puzzles me in this one is “… a phantom Who drifts above the chart”. What is this stuff about charts with ghosts drifting over the top of them?
