Can somebody direct me to the exact place in Plato's writing (e.g., Book N of The Republic, or page xx of The Symposium) where the following popular quotation (or something close to it) comes from? I've had no luck in finding it in the printed copies I have of his works:

Quotation #31650 from Laura Moncur's Motivational Quotations:

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

Many thanks!
...Carl

The quotation 'Be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle,' is often attributed to Plato, or alternatively to Philo of Alexandria. Sadly, it apparently isn't to be found in the works of either of them. On the other hand the theologian John Watson (1850-1907), writing under the pseudonym Ian Maclaren, said 'Be pitiful, for every man is fighting a hard battle'.
