Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have ... The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases.

Who said this: Thomas Jefferson, Gerald Ford or Ford rewording Jefferson?

And the winner is---President Gerald R. Ford

The American wage earner and the American housewife are a lot better economists than most economists care to admit. They know that a government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.~Remarks to a joint session of Congress, August 12, 1974. Representative Ford expressed the same idea nearly 15 years earlier.

The quote is often misattributed to Jefferson.
