I found this sentence in a poem by Alexander Pope, and also in the book Elective Affinities by Goethe...Someone I know says Shakespeare.
Can you help?
Thank you

The earliest reference is: The proper Science and Subject for Man's Contemplation is Man himself (La vraie science et le vrai étude de l'homme c'est l'homme.)~Pierre Charron, Traité de la Sagesse, bk 1, ch. 1 (1601)
Pope's An Essay on Man (1733), Epistle 2, l.1, is the usual reference.
