There is a line in a poem,
"the room had that distinctive smell, one finds in anterooms of hell..."
Does anyone recognize it?

Well this is embarrassing. It took me a few days of hard thinking and searching through a library of books and papers but I did find that line and the poem it goes with.
And unless you were one of a dozen people in my poetry class in college, you never read that line.

So what is the title of the poem and the name of the writer?

It was in a class titled "Survey of Genre" in the Poetry quarter-semester and I don't remember the classmate's name. As I think back to 1970, I remember parts of the poem. Not enough to reconstruct it or to give a name to it.
