Mike,
You've got the Emerson quote (that does not seem to appear in anything he has written) as "with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense". Over at Quoteland we have it as "encumbered".
Searching rwe.org results in no success in trying to source this quote, so I'm thinking this thing is either paraphrased or manufactured.
Any interest in trying to sort this out?

I can't find anything like this in the works of RWE either, so I marked it as "attributed".
I did find the word "cumbered" in one of his other essays, so it might very well have been the original word in this quote, but since we can't authenticate it right now I've changed ours to the more natural-sounding "encumbered".
