Recently I've been searching elsewhere for some works of a famous Japanese writer (or perhaps a novelist, I'm not quite sure) called Shusaku Endo, especially the book called " When I Whistle". It was really good, though I've just had enough time to read the preface (the price was far beyond my reach XD). By the time I returned, it has already gone. So can anyone please post on the site some of his works? I'll be very grateful. Thank you all in advance.

A Life of Jesus

From a discussion forum at
http://forums.icine.org/to-the-iciner-w ... 17734.html :

He watched the group as, all manacled, they climbed the height and disappeared from sight into the distant plateau. 'Hoc passionis tempore piis adauge gratiam.' The prayer rose up to his dry lips bitterly. 'Lord,' he murmured. 'Do not increase their suffering. Already it is too heavy for their them. Until today they have been able to bear it. Can you give even more trials to people already crushed with the burdens of taxation, officialdom and cruelty?'
~ Shusaku Endo, “Silence”
...Now for the first time the old man's hands stopped moving, and shaking his head he looked at the priest as though he were soothing a naughty child. 'We will not punish the fathers without reason,' he said.
'That is not the idea of Inoue. If you were Inoue you would punish me instantly.'
At these words the officials laughed heartily as though they had been told a joke.
'What are you laughing at?
'Father, this is Inoue, the governor of Chikugo. He is here in front of you.'
~ Shusaku Endo, “Silence”

The only one work by Shusaku Endo I have read and that impressed me most was the Life of Jesus. But i'm sure this is not the first time that Shusaku Endo has written about the persecution of Christians during the 17th century.
